What Is An OB/GYN?

An OB/GYN is an Obstetrician/Gynecologist who focuses on the health of women before, during, and after childbearing years. OB/GYNs are medical doctors who have received specialized education in the area of the female reproductive system and surgical care. Much of their education focuses on the detection and management of obstetrical and gynecological problems.

How Are OB/GYNs Trained?

To become Board Certified with the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG), physicians must graduate from an approved medical school, complete an additional four years of residency training that includes: obstetrics, gynecology, ultrasonography and preventive care, and pass an exam given by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) to be board certified. To maintain active Board Certification, OB/GYNs must receive continuing education and testing with ABOG yearly.
